Reporting

What happens when I submit a report?

TikTok takes a proactive approach to keeping our community safe. We use both automated and human evaluation to detect and take action against violations of our Community Guidelines.

While TikTok is able to remove the majority of this content before it’s reported to us, we encourage everyone in our community to play an active part in keeping TikTok a safe and welcoming place by reporting content they feel violates our Guidelines.

If you decide to report, you can feel safe knowing that TikTok will not disclose your identity to the person whose content or account you’re reporting.

How to report content on TikTok?

You can support the community by reporting any video, comment, or account you believe violates our Community Guidelines. Your report helps us to take appropriate action if warranted.

Visit our Help Center for more details on reporting a problem, including how to:

How does detection and enforcement work?

TikTok aims to remove content or accounts that violate our guidelines before they are viewed or shared by other people in order to reduce potential harm.

Proactive detection:

  1. TikTok content goes through technology that reviews it against our Community Guidelines.
  2. If our technology identifies content as potentially violative, it will be automatically removed, or flagged for additional review by our moderators.
  3. Harmful content can potentially pose a threat to our community. In order to reduce this risk, as an additional check, our automated moderation systems may send videos with a high number of views to our content moderators for further review against our Community Guidelines.

If a report is submitted we will review the reported content to check if it violates our policies (such as our Community Guidelines). If it does, we will take action against it, including removal. We may also assess if the content is illegal in one or more countries or regions.

Learn more about our enforcement efforts through the Enforcement section of our Community Guidelines as well as through our Transparency Center.

What happens when reported content violates our Community Guidelines?

If it is determined that content violates our Community Guidelines, TikTok may take action that includes:

  • Removing the violative content from the platform
  • Banning the account
  • Reporting incidents of youth sexual exploitation and abuse to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC). We also report to relevant law enforcement authorities when there is a specific, credible, and imminent threat to human life or serious physical injury.

When may a report lead to content becoming ineligible for the For You feed?

While the spontaneity of the For You feed is what makes TikTok unique, it is intended for a broad audience that includes everyone from teenagers to great-grandparents. There are times when we make certain content ineligible for the For You feed if it may be inappropriate for a broad audience. This includes content related to:

  • Behavioral health
  • Sensitive and mature themes
  • Integrity and authenticity
  • Regulated goods

We may also make some of this content harder to find in Search. You can learn more about content violations and For You Feed ineligibility in our Help Center under content violations and bans.

What type of notifications will go out after a report is made?

  • After a report is made, we may update you on the status and progress of your report in your inbox, or the report outcome can be viewed in your report history under Settings and Privacy > Support > Safety Center > Report Records.
  • If we make content (video, photo, comment, audio, or LIVE) ineligible for the For You feed or otherwise restrict it, we may notify the creator and share the violation reason. However, we would never include information about who reported their content.
  • If the person’s account has been banned because of a violation, they will receive a banner notification when they next open the app, informing them about this change in account status.

Can a report decision be overturned?

If it is believed that an account was banned incorrectly, an appeal can be submitted as seen in the account safety section of TikTok’s Help Center. TikTok would never reveal information about who reported this content through the appeals process.
